Abstract

Objective: The article is constructed to understand how business models innovations for sustainability (BMIfS) have been emerging in the field of electric vehicles, assisting in the transition to electromobility. It focuses on ongoing experiences in the State of São Paulo, using Tembici as a practical example of a project that achieves its objectives both financially and environmentally favorably to the areas it operates in.

Methodology/approach: We search for spatial elements in the State of São Paulo that support the implementation of BMIfS related to electric mobility. By identifying the characteristics of these installed business models and drawing from international references, we overlay them with the reality in São Paulo.

Originality/relevance: The study contributes to a scarce context of practical studies on BMIfS, especially those aiming to reveal the possible innovations behind these practices. Additionally, it brings a transversality of BMIfS as transition agents to encourage electric mobility.

Main conclusions: Despite resistance, São Paulo also possesses unique characteristics. Thus, private actors appropriate BMIfS to create new opportunities in the mobility market. In this way, Tembici, which is discussed here, builds a value creation chain associated with sustainable advertising for third parties through bike rentals.

Theoretical/methodological contributions: The elements discussed in the text validate the proposition of BMIfS as a possible option for the mobility market in the State of São Paulo, facilitating both the transition to electromobility and value appropriation by entrepreneurs.
